Korean skincare has been very popular the past few years; it seems to be decades ahead of the game.

For instance, sheet masks originated from the East.

So did cushion compacts which were invented in Korea.

Thus, Korean beauty experts have become very popular.

The simple reason for the popularity of Korean skincare is the fact that it works.

It is effective in clearing up the skin, giving it a healthy glow, and maintaining its youthful properties.

Let’s take a look at essential parts of Korean skincare that you can incorporate into your skincare routine.

Step 1: Cleansing the Skin

You probably already include cleansing in your skincare routine but Korean skincare has two parts: the use of an oil cleanser and the use of a foam cleanser.

Oil cleansers are for removing makeup and other debris from oil-based formulations (sunscreen, pollution particles).

Foam cleansers are for removing other impurities that remain on the skin after one cleanse.

This includes sweat and dirt which can cause blemishes.

Step 2: Exfoliation

This is not just for removing dead skin cells from the skin but also for de-clogging pores.

The result is clear and more radiant skin. However, this step shouldn’t be done daily.

Exfoliating should only be once or twice a week depending on your skin type.

Sensitive skin should only be exfoliated once every 5 to 7 days.

Step 3: Toner

After thoroughly cleansing the skin with the two-part process, the skin is left in a delicate state.

It needs to be rehydrated which can be done with a good toner.

Applying a toner also helps prepare the skin for the next treatments, enhancing their absorption.

Step 4: Essence

This is the heart of Korean skincare which is a product of their culture.

It is a formulation that is similar to serums or boosters but it has a watery consistency that is similar to a toner.

This is an important step since it treats the skin at a cellular level to address issues such as aging signs (fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles, etc.).

Step 5: Mask

Most people have already included the use of masks in their skincare routine.

There are different skincare products and choosing one primarily depends on the needs of your skin.

There are hydrating masks and there are also products designed to brighten the skin.

Masks are typically used two times a week only but they can be skipped if you are already using a serum and/or essence.

Step 6: Eye Cream

Korean skincare advocates the use of an eye cream even for young people and this is probably the reason Koreans have youthful-looking skin even as they reach old age.

Eye creams can be used for prevention but there are also products that can reduce aging signs that are already visible.

There are formulations that address all skin aging signs in the eye area including fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles, and eye bags.

Step 7: SPF

Korean skincare probably adopted the use of SPF from Americans but it is now an integral part of the routine.

Protecting the skin from the ultraviolet rays of the sun is one of the best ways to slow down the aging process of the skin.
