What is Lumigan?
Lumigan, from a pharmaceutical manufacturer, Allergan, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2010 for the treatment of intraocular pressure, a condition where there is high eye pressure most especially among people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
In the same way that Allergan discovered the use of Botox for treating wrinkles–Botox was originally intended to paralyze and relax tensed muscles which had the beneficial effect of lessening skin creasing-Lumigan’s welcome side effect of making eyelashes thicker and longer was observed.
Allergan[1] then, created another line for Lumigan called Latisse which was marketed as an eyelash enhancer. Just as Lumigan is a prescription-only drug, Latisse may only be bought with prescription. Because eyelashes follow a life cycle, which means it grows but eventually falls out, eyelashes grow back to their normal length and thickness after Lumigan or Latisse use is discontinued.
Although, some people also claimed that some negative side effects remain, including possible permanent brown pigmentation of the iris, and darkening of skin on the eyelids.
Lumigan comes in two concentration of 0.03% Lumigan ophthalmic solution which cost approximately US$120.
Lumigan – Does It Really Work?
Even drug manufacturer, Allergan, has yet to fully understand how and why Lumigan causes eyelashes to thicken. What has been definitely understood is that Lumigan works two ways: first, by extending the life cycle of hair strands, in that it takes longer to fall out; and, second, it stimulates and activates hair shaft even in areas where hair do not normally grow.
As Lumigan’s active ingredients work regularly on your eyelashes, you should begin to see noticeable improvements on your eyelashes as early as the second month of use but, normally within three months of nightly application.
Based on a study performed by Allergan where subjects were put under treatment and observation for 16 weeks, the following results were obtained:
- Eyelash length increased by 25 percent
- Thickness and fullness increased by 106 percent
- Eyelash darkness increased by 18 percent
Does Lumigan Have Any Side Effects?
Lumigan may cause both temporary and permanent side effects. Lengthier, thicker lashes are a pleasant but temporary side effect. Among the unpleasant side effects include potential darkening of the eyelids and permanent brown pigmentation of the iris.
